FAQs
Do Frenectomies Hurt?
Because we use the LightScalpel laser to complete our frenectomies, the wound from this procedure closes almost immediately after it is completed. This means that your child should experience almost no discomfort. In fact, in most cases anesthetic may not even be necessary!
When Can I Start Nursing Again After My Baby’s Frenectomy?
You can begin nursing or feeding your baby immediately after their frenectomy procedure. In fact, it is highly recommended, as it enables your child to get more of the nutrients essential for healing.
While some parents notice their baby can latch immediately following treatment, be aware that some may take a bit longer. Either way, there’s no need to worry! Some children require additional time to get used to their new range of oral movement, but they should adjust relatively quickly.
How Long Do Frenectomies Take?
A laser frenectomy done with the LightScalpel laser only takes a few minutes to complete right here in our office.
If your child has both a lip and tongue tie or an especially thick frenulum, however, this procedure could take a little longer. Your dentist can give you a more accurate timeline at your child’s consultation.
Is My Child Old Enough to Get Tongue-Tie Treatment?
It’s natural for parents to be concerned about their child undergoing any kind of procedure at any age, but the great news is that laser frenectomies are extremely safe, pose virtually no risk to the patient, and can be done on children as young as just a few days old.
Because tongue and lip ties do not resolve on their own, there is usually no reason to delay treatment so your child can begin enjoying the benefits as soon as possible.
